L'ansia rappresenta un meccanismo di difesa del nostro corpo di fronte a situazioni di emergenza, di pericolo o di conflitto.

Molti storici, filosofi, psicologi hanno studiato le origini dell'ansia, sembra abbia origini antichissime e assume significati diversi nelle differenti civiltà.
Nell'antica grecia veniva chiamata melanconia e ritenuta uno dei quattro umori "bile nera" (bile gialla, flegma e sangue) la cui combinazione determinava gli stati d'animo e il carattere degli uomini.
Veniva curata con il vino e vita all'aria aperta.
Nel medioevo si cominciò a configurarla come un disturbo della mente e dello spirito e curata attraverso penitenze e redenzione religiosa.
Dopo l'Ottocento fu configurata come malattia mentale, curata con i farmaci e la psicoterapia.
I soggetti affetti da ansia soffrono di disturbi che interferiscono con la vita quotidiana :
preoccupazione eccessiva ed incontrollata, sudorazione, palpitazioni, vertigini e sensazione di testa vuota,secchezza delle fauci, dispnea, nodo alla gola, iperidrosi ( sudorazione eccessiva),pollachiuria,disturbi del sonno.
Altri sintomi possono essere pensieri ossessivi, mancanza di e attenzione, irritabilità.
I sintomi possono comunque variare da individuo a individuo e il manifestarsi di questi disturbi somatici può indurre a non credere che possano dipendere dalla propria psiche ma da qualche patologia organica, e concentrando l'attenzione sui sintomi fisici si possono sviluppare idee ipocondriache che diventano il punto focale del problema.
Il medico curante, nel quale dovete riporre massima fiducia, vi aiuterà anche attraverso accertamenti a fugare i sospetti di patologie diverse.
Imparare a capire come corpo e mente siano strettamente interconnessi, può rappresentare un buon punto di partenza per riuscire a creare un rapporto armonioso con se stessi, a frenare i soggetti da visite ed esami medici protratti nel tempo.
Conoscersi e capire i sentimenti e i bisogni, dedicare più tempo a guardarci dentro e accettare meglio noi stessi, imparare ad accettare le debolezze e controllare meglio i nostri stati emotivi.
Un supporto psicologico si rende molto spesso necessario, sfatando il mito che lo psicologo cura i matti e si può fare da soli.
Quando gli attacchi di ansia non finiscono con il termine dell'evento scatenante ma assumono un carattere cronico, l'uso dei farmaci, sotto stretta prescrizione medica, può rappresentare un valido rimedio terapeutico.
Non bisogna farsi prendere la mano e abusare dei farmaci al di fuori della prescrizione medica, sarà il medico a valutare caso per caso in base al quadro clinico.
