E’ provato al livello internazionale che l’allattamento al seno offre innumerevoli vantaggi sia al bambino che alla mamma. L’allattamento al seno inoltre crea un rapporto straordinario tra la mamma e il bebè. Gli esperti dell’ Università di Rochester, negli Stati Uniti, hanno presentato nel corso del congresso annuale dell’Accademia e delle Società pediatriche americane, a Baltimora uno studio sugli effetti dell’allattamento al seno per quanto concerne lapolmonite e l’otite. Gli esperti hanno studiato la nutrizione dei primi mesi di vita e poi la salute nei primi due anni di un gruppo di quasi 2750 bambini. I ricercatori hanno così osservato che rispetto a quanto accade ai piccoli che sono stati allattati con il latte artificiale, i neonati allattati al seno per almeno 6 mesi, vedono ridursi notevolmente il rischio di essere colpiti da altre malattie respiratorie comelaringite e faringite. Questo accade perché il latte materno ha un effetto protettivo sull’apparato respiratorio del bambino. Nei primi due anni di vita, si riduce di oltre 5 volte il rischio diammalarsi di polmonite,la pericolosa infezione dei polmoni. Inoltre nei bambini nutriti con il latte materno si dimezza il rischio di essere colpiti da un’ infezione delle orecchie.
